What is CNG?
CNG is a made by compressing natural gas to less than 1% of its volume at standard atmospheric pressure. In its final form, CNG is odorless, colorless and tasteless. Nearly all of the CNG used today is produced domestically through drilling and shale gas extraction techniques.
CNG – a Smart Transportation Fuel
According to multiple industry sites, CNG as a transportation fuel dates back to World War II. With the evolution and refinement of technology, the use of CNG has grown worldwide, from consumer vehicles, like the Honda Civic NGV, to commercial vehicles like transit buses, school buses, long-haul trucks and police cars, to name a few. Today, there are more than 142,000 vehicles that use CNG in America.*
CNG vs. Diesel – Do You Really Save?
The cost of CNG is currently much lower than the cost of traditional petroleum products. And many companies are taking advantage of the savings. Above is a breakdown of the cost of CNG vs. diesel, as of November 2014. As you can see, almost 60% of the diesel price is based on crude oil production, while only 20% of the cost of CNG is based on natural gas production. Clearly, CNG is the economical choice!
Benefits of Natural Gas/CNG
- Nearly all natural gas is produced domestically and alleviates our dependency on foreign oil. Our current supply is enough to last for 100 years.
- Natural gas contains less carbon than any other fossil fuel, thus producing fewer carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when burned. As a result, NGVs emit less greenhouse gases than vehicles that use traditional petroleum fuels.
- The cost of natural gas is currently significantly less than the cost of petroleum products.
